The power of micro moments: why small decisions decide big outcomes

Most of the decisions that shape a career do not feel like decisions at all.

After a show at a Google event, a woman walked up to Johnny Wu and said: "I did everything right, and I hate my life." She had followed every step. Good school, good job, good company. None of it had been a single big mistake. It was thousands of small moments, each one reasonable, that added up to a life she never chose.

That conversation became Johnny's TEDx talk, Is Your Success Just an Illusion?, and then his keynote, The Power of Micro Moments. The idea is simple and uncomfortable: the smallest decisions quietly decide the biggest outcomes, and most of them do not feel like decisions at all.

Principle one: Tuning

The voices we listen to shape our beliefs, our decisions and who we think we are. Parents, managers, feeds, the loudest person in the meeting. On stage Johnny steers a whole room's attention at once and then shows them how he did it. The lesson: attention can be steered, so choose what you tune into.

Principle two: Alignment

Small daily choices have a greater impact on success than the major decisions. A volunteer's choices, made freely in front of everyone, turn out to have been shaped from the first second. The Mountain Audit then asks a harder question: whose definition of success have you been climbing toward?

Principle three: Persistence

Repetition turns impossible goals into achievable outcomes. The finale proves that a result was decided long before anyone thought they were choosing, and the room learns to spot the installed beliefs still steering their decisions.

How to use micro moments at work

  • Notice which voices you tune into first thing every morning
  • Pick one small daily action that moves your real goal, and protect it
  • Ask, once a quarter, whose mountain you are climbing
  • Repeat the boring thing until it stops being hard
  • Watch for the moments that do not feel like decisions. Those are the ones that count

Johnny delivers The Power of Micro Moments as a 40 to 60 minute experiential keynote with live mind reading for leadership teams, sales kickoffs and conferences. Check availability.
